What Does the REI Classification Mean?

Fire resistance REI is one of the key fire safety parameters in construction. According to the PN-EN ISO 13943 standard, fire resistance is the ability of an element to fulfill, for a specified period of time, the required load-bearing capacity and/or integrity, and/or thermal insulation, and/or other expected performance criteria specified in a standard fire resistance test.

In short, it stands for:

  • R – Load-bearing capacity (the ability of a structure to sustain loads during a fire),

  • E – Integrity (the prevention of passage of flames and hot gases),

  • I – Insulation (the limitation of temperature rise on the unexposed side of the partition).

The measure of fire resistance is the time, expressed in minutes, from the start of the fire until the structural element reaches one of the three above-mentioned limit criteria. In practice:

  • REI 30 means that the roof retains its properties for a minimum of 30 minutes of fire exposure,

  • REI 60 – for a minimum of 60 minutes.

Insulation of the Future – Quality Confirmed by Certificates and Tests

The termPIR® insulation boards, manufactured by Gór-Stal, are modern materials made of rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam. This solution is widely used in construction for insulating roofs, walls, ceilings, floors, and foundations – in both residential and industrial buildings.

The Fire Research Department of the Building Research Institute (ITB) in Warsaw conducted fire resistance tests on pitched roofs with gypsum board linings and over-rafter insulation using termPIR® insulation boards (AL, Izoproof ALu) with a minimum thickness of 140 mm in a large format (1200 mm x 2400 mm) with a tongue-and-groove (TAG) joint.

The obtained REI fire resistance class of the partition depends on the type of plasterboards used – we recommend EtexGroup boards, which have been tested together with our product.

Thanks to the obtained REI 30 and REI 60 classifications, the termPIR® system can be safely used in projects such as:

  • Single-family and multi-family residential buildings,

  • Public utility buildings (schools, administration offices, office spaces),

  • Industrial and warehouse buildings with usable attics.

Benefits of Using termPIR®

  • Enhanced fire safety level – confirmed by laboratory testing,

  • Excellent thermal insulation – thermal conductivity coefficient $\lambda \approx 0.022\text{ W/mK}$,

  • Moisture and mold resistance – ideal for roofs and attics,

  • Easy and fast installation – the boards are lightweight, durable, and do not settle over time,

  • Durability and reliability – long-lasting insulation without any loss of parameters.

Gór-Stal has been delivering innovative insulation solutions for the demanding construction market for years. Obtaining the REI 30/60 classification confirms that our products meet the highest standards, not only in terms of energy efficiency but also fire safety.
